MBA recruiting practices in the UK and Europe

The concept of substantial on-campus recruitment for MBAs is a myth in the UK and Europe, apart from the few schools that conform to the US model.

This is because the variety of professional backgrounds, nationality and age range of MBA students here creates a lack of critical mass - it is simply not economically viable for companies to travel to all business schools.

There is, of course, recruitment - it is the methods that vary. These include:

  • In-house current vacancy sites
  • Student profile books and on-line CVs
  • Pan-European and global recruitment fairs, both actual and virtual
  • Networking and alumni events
  • Corporate visits
  • Pro-active corporate liaison.

Immigration

UK immigration is a complex issue. Careers centres are not accredited to give immigration advice, therefore we bring in professional advisors to talk to our students as a group, and also arrange individual consultancy to make an initial assessment of each case.

Many MBAs are eligible for the Highly Skilled Migrant visa, which allows an individual and his/her family to live and work - or search for work - in the UK. Strathclyde is part of a UK Home Office listing of 50 top business schools, which may make it easier to get points towards this visa.

The Scottish Fresh Talent Initiative has been introduced and, from the summer of 2005, allows students graduating from Scottish Universities (with a minimum residency requirement) to remain in Scotland, to live and work, for up to 2 years post-graduation

The official UK immigration site is: www.workpermits.gov.uk

We will continue to consult individually with alumni for some time post-graduation.
