Case Study: Nicholas Macauley BITS

I had a fantastic year on the BITS course. It was both a demanding and challenging experience.

The late nights spent in the lecture room and in SBS doing last minute revisions and dissertation chapters will live long in my memory - as will the day out that was organised as part of the Business Operations class. Although there was a lot of hard work, there were a lot of laughs too.

I came to the course as a late applicant because I was in full-time employment and fancies a career change. I'd been in the business school as an undergraduate and had been advised that, if considering post graduate study, to apply to the BITS programme - I'm glad I took that advice!

I found the mix of business and IT to be quite a challenge because the business courses were far more strategic and thought-provoking than those I'd studied previously. Individual assignments were a thing of the past and group work was instead a major focus. Everything is related to industry, which is very useful.

Another distinct advantage was the fact I could learn from so many intelligent students, both from home and overseas, and together we were able to learn from one another. My IT skills were also greatly increased. The course illustrated how IT systems and technology could be applied to business in so many ways. This was advantageous to me because it increased my skills set and assisted when looking for jobs.

I found I was offered a number of interviews and invited to a variety of assessment centres by large companies. I don't think this would have been possible without being able to talk about my experiences on the course. I found that I was able to apply the knowledge I'd acquired over the year and combine this with my work experience to help me get my current job with HP. I'm responsible for a number of large accounts in the UK and I wouldn't have had this opportunity if I hadn't joined the BITS course.
