Case Study: Sharat Satyanarayana MBM

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Sharat Satyanarayana, I'm 25 and from Bangalore, India.

What was your background before the MBM?
I was a mechanical engineer for two years.

Why did you choose to the MBM programme?
I wanted exposure to subjects in management so that I could orient my engineering experience to management. Strathclyde was recommended by the people I sought advice from.

What are your opinions of the programme?
The MBM provided almost ideal overall exposure to the different subjects one might come across as a manager. The emphasis on group work proved gruelling in practice but worth the trouble - interaction with different cultures and backgrounds was really interesting and we gained truly global exposure with the different nationalities on the course. The most interesting parts of the course were the financial and business planning courses, while the project experience forces you to look at your chosen topic from a wide range of perspectives. I can't forget the socialising side of things either as I've made friends I'll keep for life!

Has it been what you expected?
In some areas, the course overshot my expectations and in others didn't rate quite as highly as I expected, but all the lecturers helped us with confidence building. I landed a large project with a consulting firm based in London. This practical exposure I'm getting should be something most students should aim towards. It also helps in building up the CV.

Are you interested in converting to an MBA in the future?
My initial intention was to convert the MBM to an MBA eventually, but I've come to realise that the skills and knowledge I've developed through this course will see me through any professional requirements.

What are your plans after graduation?
I will be working towards getting a return on the investment I made in the MBM. I hope to gain some solid work experience so I can combine the management skills I have gained over the past year with my engineering background, and perhaps hone these skills further in a few years through some specialised courses.
