Case Study: Wijay Kanagasundaram, MBM

Before beginning the MBM programme, I was working for Costco Wholesale UK Ltd as an accounts assistant and was simultaneously studying for my ACCA qualifications.

I had studied accounting as an undergraduate with the University of Surrey and as I was continuing with my ACCA qualifications, I felt both were "technical" and I wanted to do something that would hone my skills as a future manager.

The MBM programme at Strathclyde has been recognised as one of the best Masters courses in Europe and the option of converting the MBM into the world-class Strathclyde MBA at a future date convinced me to apply for this course.

After deciding to do a Masters in a general business management field, I wanted to ensure the qualification was from a well-recognised business school. SBS's ranking and its triple accreditation proved to be one of the best. The location of the school and its links with Scotland's business community are second to none.

The MBM is an extremely intensive programme. Each day presented me with different challenges and the strong emphasis on team work and skill-based learning are the two most important things I enjoyed about the course. The group work gave me an opportunity to learn and interact with students from different cultures and backgrounds. It also challenged my mindset of "narrow" thinking as an accountant and gave me a more "outside the box" approach.

The ability of the course to give me an insight into every aspect of business in a relatively short period of time has been of most benefit. There was the correct mix between academic learning and practical learning throughout the course and the lecturers were easily approachable.

I have secured a job with an investment bank in the City (London) and am really looking forward to it. At the same time, I'm planning to complete my ACCA and qualify as a chartered certified accountant. I am counting the days to coming back to Strathclyde to convert my MBM into an MBA.

I will miss every bit of my days here at Strathclyde and, as well as the whole learning experience, I will miss the late nights with fellow classmates after a hard day of course work.

I'd advise anyone who wants to be a successful manager to start working on it now; the MBM will challenge and change you - in a positive way.
