Introducing our Research

Research in the Department of Management is strongly rooted in managerial practice as all academic staff work regularly with practising managers.

Our primary concern is to develop important theoretical insights that can and do influence managers' abilities to do their jobs. We do this by focusing on developing understanding of what managers actually do, understanding how they make decisions and focusing on development of processes that may assist them in making their practice more effective. Our research is carried out with businesses and academics around the world, ensuring it has an international relevance and that we remain leading members of the international research community.

For many of us, research data is gathered as we work with managers through their day-to-day concerns. Theories gained from this research are applied and tested on an ongoing basis through consultancy and executive development courses, ensuring that any resulting published research has been tested at all stages. This process is fundamental to our mission of producing scholarly research with managerial relevance that influences management practice. We also feed our research directly into our teaching, ensuring that participants and students are always learning the latest techniques and theories.

We are keen participants in the wider community of management researchers, publishing widely in academic journals, delivering addresses at both academic and practice-based conferences, participating centrally in management academic societies and editorial boards of journals and hosting conferences. We hope that our web pages will give you a good flavour of this activity.
