Doctoral Research Opportunities in the University of Strathclyde Department of Management
Research in the Department of Management is focussed on issues of managerial relevance which are amenable to a combination of empirical and theoretical enquiry. A good starting point in considering what topic to study in your doctoral research is to consider some of the current research being undertaken by the academic and research staff of the school and details are available on their pages of this site.
Doing a doctorate at Strathclyde Business School Department of Management involves developing a relationship between the student and supervisor over a particular research topic, so finding a supervisor who is working in your proposed area of study and has capacity to take you on is key to getting an offer of a place for doctoral study. The areas listed below are those in which a supervisor in the Department of Management may be available. (In order to supervise effectively, supervisors can only work with a small number of students so the listing of a topic below does not necessarily mean that a supervisor will be available at the time you apply).
- The Construction of and Interaction between Social Identities
- Developing and evaluating processes for scenario planning and future studies
- Management of change, innovation and creativity
- Tradition, Culture, and Structure in Organisational and Trans-organisational Contexts
- Understanding and developing support for the management of inter-organizational collaboration, partnerships and alliances
- Understanding strategy processes and developing processes for facilitating strategy development and implementation
- Management of the multinational enterprise, including the management of knowledge and innovation, transfer of managerial practice, and institutional entrepreneurship
- Internationalisation processes of MNEs, smaller organisations and entrepreneurial firms
- Cross–cultural and comparative management
If your proposed area of research is in one of the areas listed above, please contact Val Turner on email: valerie@gsb.strath.ac.uk or telephone 0141 553 6040. In your initial enquiry, please provide the following:
- a brief description of your area of interest
- a current CV
- an indication of whether you would be studying part time or full time
- an indication that you have funding
PhD students join a community of researchers and are expected to attend the regular seminar series and be present in the department on a regular basis. PhDs can be undertaken on a part time basis, but students are still expected to be in regular contact and attendance. During the first year for full time, or first two years for part time students, there is a requirement that you attend the faculty research course. An indication of what this entails is given below.

If your topic is not one that we can support, you may need to search a number of institutions to find the right place for you.
Because of the idiosyncratic nature of doctoral research, and the need to work with a supervisor who has specific expertise in your area, you may not be able to find a supervisor in your area at Strathclyde. Don’t be discouraged – search other Universities.
