Ying's research is concerned with the dynamics of identity construction in international collaborations, particularly the dynamic process of identification in terms of individual and organisational identities. The focus also extends to the area of cultural influence with the question of how culture, for instance, being either as national or organisational, working with this identification process in the settings of international collaborations.
The situations of study cover all the cross-border collaborative events including not only public but also private sectors collaborations. The methodological focus is mainly ethnographic, involving participant observation and discourse analysis in longitudinal studies. Action research in the style of Professors Eden and Huxham is also considered to help partners in collaborative inertia to achieve collaborative advantage.
Ying works as a research assistant for Professor Huxham as well as a teaching assistant in the Management Development Programme with the aim to integrate the theoretical knowledge and practical experience of undergraduates gained in their principal subjects.
